InTrans is the prime contractor for the design, installation, and ongoing maintenance of the non-stop, free flow, open architecture, automatic toll collection system at the Golden Ears Bridge (GEB). The Golden Ears Bridge connects the town of Langley and the city of Surrey to the district of Maple Ridge and the district of Pitt Meadows.

Project Description

The Golden Ears Bridge is a six-lane bridge across the Fraser River, approximately 8.08 miles long. The bridge was constructed to replace the Albion Ferry that provided the only direct link between Langley and Maple Ridge. InTranS system provides an open road toll system to reduce traffic snarls and make the commute fast, safe, and enjoyable.

InTranS design incorporates the use of an Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) system along with Automatic Vehicle Classification (AVC), and an innovative Pay-by-Plate/License Plate Recognition (LPR) system providing the GVTA the flexibility of either charging and collecting tolls directly or engaging the services of a billing organization. InTranS unique Field Subsystem identifies each vehicle by the OBU (if the vehicle is OBU Equipped), or vehicle license number plate (if a functional OBU is not present).

As part of the system, InTranS designed a modern Customer Service Center for violation processing and management of user accounts. The InTranS system communicates with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), which is the company that maintains the vehicle database for all motor vehicles and motor vehicle owners in British Columbia, and out of Province information providers for information exchange and to the Traffic Management System (TMS) for ITS support. The CSC is designed to allow for future customization making it possible to expand its use with other applications.
